Sports Medicine New Zealand (SMNZ) is a non-profit-making multidisciplinary organisation for all health professionals and other groups and individuals interested in community health, with special reference to the principles of sports medicine and exercise science.

SMNZ was founded in Dunedin in July 1963 and is an incorporated society registered in 1967 under the Incorporated Societies Act 1908. SMNZ became affiliated to the International Federation of Sports Medicine (FIMS) in 1965 and as such is one of over fifty organisations worldwide.

SMNZ has 12 regional branches; Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Bay of Plenty, Hawkes Bay, Taranaki, Manawatu, Wellington, Nelson, Canterbury, Otago and Southland. The Manawatu and Southland branches are currently managed from Wellington and Otago respectively. The National Council consisting of the National Executive Committee and a representative from each branch, administers the organisation. The SMNZ National Office is based in Dunedin.

Membership of SMNZ Offers

• subscription to the NZ Journal of Sports Medicine published half yearly (on-line access available through the members' page of the SMNZ website, volume published and distributed annually)
• subscription to the SMNZ monthly newsletter sent via email and covering items of interest on an international, national and regional basis
• invitation to apply for a listing in the SMNZ National Sports Medicine Clinical Register available on SMNZ’s website (available to full members only)
• notification of professional vacancies from within the membership and also from external organisations
• free/discounted admission to all lectures and seminars hosted by any one of SMNZ’s 12 regional branches
• the member rate at the NZ Sports Medicine and Conference held annually
• the opportunity to earn CME points via attendance at the NZ Sports Medicine and Conference

New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine

The New Zealand Journal of Sports Medicine is the official journal of Sports Medicine New Zealand, publishing material relevant to sports medicine and related disciplines.

The NZJSM welcomes submissions of original manuscripts from both members and non members of SMNZ in the following areas; sports medicine, sports physiotherapy, clinically relevant sport science, rehabilitation, coaching issues as they relate to sports medicine, exercise prescription and training, sports chiropractic, sports podiatry and sport psychology.

National Sports Medicine Clinical Register

Full members are invited to submit a listing on the National Register which is available to the public via the SMNZ website. Members' contact details, qualifications and experience are recorded.

NZ Sports Medicine Conference

This is an annual conference and is held in a different venue each year. Delegates number approximately 200 and the programme is a two and a half day event covering multi-disciplinary sessions including medicine, physiotherapy, nutrition and podiatry presentations, and a specialist session for sports physicians/doctors and sports physiotherapists.

The conference on occasion combines with the annual meetings of Sport and Exercise Science New Zealand and The Australasian College of Sports Physicians.
